While studying Industrial Chemistry at Makerere University, I was captivated by the transformative role of scientists in solving global issues. Watching scientists on television delivering solutions to pressing problems motivated me to pursue this path further.

Understanding the unique healthcare challenges faced by marginalized communities solidified my commitment to creating affordable, efficient healthcare solutions. This journey led me to focus on advancing mRNA technology, driven by the vision of developing innovative drugs and vaccines to address unmet medical needs and improve global health outcomes.

This blend of passion, curiosity, and a desire to make a tangible difference continues to guide my work in chemistry and pharmaceuticals.

How has your role as Managing Director of Dei Biopharma evolved over the years?

When I joined Dei Biopharma, my initial focus was on assembling a strong leadership team that aligned with the company’s vision of enhancing healthcare access. This foundational step was critical in shaping the organization’s direction and ensuring collective commitment to our goals.

One of my early milestones was crafting and implementing a credible clinical research and development strategy. This strategy became the cornerstone of our activities, driving innovation and progress in the development of biological drugs and vaccines.

Over the years, my responsibilities have expanded significantly. I have supported research and development initiatives, fostered strategic global partnerships, and worked to streamline regulatory processes. Each of these roles has been integral to advancing our mission and maintaining high standards in healthcare innovation.

Today, my focus remains on steering Dei Biopharma to remain a top-tier competitor on the global healthcare stage. My role has grown to encompass not just operational leadership but also a relentless commitment to ensuring that the company continues to deliver impactful solutions in the ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

What are some key milestones in your career that you are particularly proud of?

Throughout my career as a scientist, several accomplishments stand out as defining moments. One of the most fulfilling achievements has been filing over 100 patents in the U.S., covering treatments for critical conditions such as cancer, HIV, Alzheimer’s, malaria, and diabetes. Leading the development of the Dei Anti-Malarial drug, recognized as the most efficient of its kind and successfully securing a U.S. patent for it, exemplifies our relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence.

Receiving FDA regulatory approval and being inducted into Sigma Xi, a prestigious scientific honor society that counts luminaries like Albert Einstein among its members, are milestones I deeply cherish. Additionally, being honored with the International Molecular Biologist Award for my work on mRNA technology further validates my commitment to advancing healthcare solutions.

On a personal level, establishing Uganda’s first state-of-the-art pharmaceutical and biotechnology facility remains a crowning achievement. This endeavor is a symbol of our mission to foster self-reliance and innovation in Africa’s healthcare sector, ensuring access to cutting-edge treatments for communities that need them the most.

How do you balance the demands of your professional responsibilities with your personal life?

Despite sleeping only 3-4 hours a night, I make the most of my time by delegating tasks to a trusted team, which allows me to focus on strategic priorities. Practicing mindfulness helps me stay present and centered, while staying active keeps me physically and mentally sharp.
